Education Programs Spring 2012 - deadline to sign up is January 16, 2012

The Steamboat Symphony Orchestra offers music education programs for children, teens and adults.

For the 2012 spring season, SSO is proud to offer these educational programs to the Yampa Valley Community:

Steamboat String Ensemble – For teen and adult musicians at intermediate to advanced levels. Instruments include violin, viola, cello, bass. Teresa Steffen Greenlee is the director of the Steamboat String Ensemble.

Monticellos– For teen and adult Cellists at intermediate to advanced levels. Bruce Dean is the director of the Monticellos.

Flute Choir – For youth and adults, the Flute Choir is SSO's latest offering for flutists of intermediate or advanced ability. The group will explore music of a variety of different genres. Teri Rose and Katie Rasmussen are the directors of the Flute Choir.

Youth Ensemble – We are also looking into the possibility of starting a youth ensemble with musicians who are at the level of Suzuki Book 2 or equivalent. Instruments would include violin, viola, cello, bass. Other instruments may be included by permission of the director. Please let us ASAP know if you have an interest in participating in a youth ensemble or a youth orchestra.

CONCERT - The groups will perform in a combined concert Tuesday, March 6 at 7 pm at the Steamboat Community Center. Admission $7, $20 for a family. Tickets only sold at the door. Ernest Richardson, Music Director of the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra, will conduct the concert. All participants in the education programs are expected to perform in the Concert.

• Applications for scholarships due 1/15/2012
• Registration & tuition payment due TBD
• Tuition is $190
• Rehearsals begin TBD
• The last two rehearsals will be Sunday 3/4 and Monday 3/5
• Last two rehearsals under the direction of Ernest Richardson, Music Director
• Concert is Tuesday, 3/6/12

About the Steamboat String Ensemble Director
Ms. Steffen Greenlee is the principal 1st Violinist for the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra. She was the founding director of the Steamboat Springs Youth Orchestra and Ensemble Program, and performs regularly as a member of the Steamboat String Quartet.

About the Monticellos Director
Bruce Dean is a computer programmer. He was briefly a music major at the University of North Carolina before switching to math. He teaches several young cellists and plays in the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra and the Steamboat Piano Trio. Bruce also plays the mandolin and Ultimate Frisbee whenever he can.



Flute Choir
• For youth and adult flutists at intermediate and advanced levels
• 8 rehearsals
• Wednesday rehearsals 7:00-8:30 PM at First String Music
• Applications for scholarships due TBD
• Registration & tuition payment due TBD
• Tuition is $150
• First rehearsal is TBD

About the Flute Choir Directors
Teri Rose earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance from Baylor University. She also studied with the celebrated Marcel Moyse of the Paris Conservatory. 27 yrs of flute instruction lead her to conduct many award winning high school flute choirs in Colorado Springs prior to moving to Steamboat. Teri is also an avid water color artist and skier.

Katie Rasmussen is currently the 2nd flutist of the Steamboat Orchestra. Primarily an oboist, she began studying music at the age of 8. Katie has played principal oboe in numerous organizations including The San Diego Wind Ensemble and second oboe in the La Jolla Symphony. In addition to flute and oboe, Katie has also performed on recorder, alto and tenor saxophones, and English horn. She started focusing on flute in San Diego before moving to Steamboat and playing with the orchestra 5 years ago. Katie teaches and repairs oboe, flute, clarinet and saxophones here in Steamboat. She enjoys inspiring people to make music.




Youth Scholarships Scholarships for a SSO Education Program are available for youth under age 20 years. A Scholarship Application should be submitted to SSO for each session by the scholarship deadline date. A Registration Form should also be completed by the registration deadline date. Scholarship deadline: TBD Scholarship awards are based on financial need. Families will be advised of awards before the Program start.

Information on 2011 May Honor Recital.

Auditions were held on May 14, 2011.

Mission: To showcase outstanding students who exemplify excellence in musicianship in voice or orchestral instruments. Select student instrumentalists amd vocalists from throughout the Yampa Valley will be featured.

Instruments: Orchestral instruments, piano, voice
Type of music: Classical music selections or music demonstrating technical proficiency and artistry are preferred.
Accompaniment: Piano accompaniment is allowed, but not required.
Age limit: Performers must be 18 years or younger.

Honor Recital Application



The Recital was held Sunday, May 15 at the United Methodist Church at 3 PM for the public.
Tickets will be sold at the door. All proceeds will benefit the youth scholarship fund for SSO's 2011-12 Education Programs. The Methodist Church is located at 736 Oak Street, Steamboat Springs.
